OAS, Organization of American States

Established on April 30, 1948, the Organization of American States (OAS) is an organization which regroups America’s sovereign states together. The organization’s purpose is to defend the democracy and the human rights, to strengthen security, to struggle against drug traffic and corruption, finally to promote economic, social and cultural cooperation upon the continent.
The primary bodies of the OAS are General Assembly (which gets together every year), the Consultation of Foreign Ministers (called for settlement of any situation with a sense of urgency) and the Permanent Council, comprising one representative from each member country and with headquarters in Washington, the USA.
